    Happy that I upgraded, October 9, 2012

My main concern when I upgraded to CS6–from a very old copy of CS2–was that Adobe would have made so many changes that I would be facing a steep learning curve. I’m happy to say that wasn’t so. For the most part it’s been a smooth transition to bring my old projects into the new program and continue working on them.

Features I love: The new Liquid Layout feature, the convenient toolbars, the fact that the basic program didn’t change all that much.

Features I don’t love: Some of the fonts used in my older documents are no longer available (with one client who needs consistency in a set of book covers, this became somewhat major). I will continue to search for a way to get access to the one font that is crucial. Adobe’s Help materials assume that a user is familiar with terminology that other design programs don’t use, and even once you know the term you are looking for it’s sometimes a challenge to figure out where to find the information you need.

I also ordered Adobe InDesign CS6 Classroom in a Book. I thought it was a user’s manual, but in fact it’s a course on learning and using InDesign. I’m eager to get started with it, as I think it will probably help fill in a lot of the gaps in my knowledge of the program and Adobe’s terminology.

Overall, I’m very happy with both purchases.

I used Quark Xpress for more than five years in Windows. Finally, after months of frustration with Quark Xpress 7, I decided to go with InDesign CS5.5 with a promise of a free CS6 upgrade. A knowledge of Quark Xpress, despite what Adobe says, will not help much in using InDesign. I have tried to upgrade InDesign to CS6 since buying it a few months ago. After waiting for 1-1/2 hours, my patience has run out with Adobe and I’ll avoid their software from now on. Certainly, InDesign offers the capability to do just about anything you need to achieve in desktop publishing–but I’m not sure it’s worth the trouble. Quark has superior customer service, and I will probably opt for Quark 9 soon.
