Well I stick to Kale and Mustard Greens. He LOVES kale and if he sees me bringing it flips out. Those two are fairly cheap and should be decent to grow. I also get crickets from Walmart. One in my area has them year round. They are way less expensive! Good Luck!

Buy 250 mealworms, and put them in a big space plastic tub. Use brown flakes for substrate, and they eat carrots. Very easy to breed, just leave them be and they’ll do it. Crickets are more difficult though. Try checking guides on how to breed food on youtube.

One of the best ways to save money is to order your crickets in bulk online. They are much cheaper per cricket if you do it that way. You could try growing your own produce; how about kale? Just make sure you wash it VERY well in case there are any traces of pesticides or parasites, etc. on it. =)
