What are some things that can be done inside a company to prevent jobs from being sent overseas?

Question by deza4046: What are some things that can be done inside a company to prevent jobs from being sent overseas?
I work at a company that is talking about sending our jobs overseas for cheaper labor. They have approached the union rep and tried talking to him about accepting lower wages but that was a no go. What are some other things that can be done to change the unions minds in order to save the company.
Why wouldn’t the union rep accept lower wages? Isn’t a job that pays a little less better than no job at all?

  1. Fred S says:

Yes, a job is better than no job.

    Your choices are:
    – dump the union so you can negotiate on your own.
    – agree to lower benefits, rather than lower salary
    – become more productive (produce more goods for the same cost)
    – improve the quality of the goods

The company is looking at its total cost of labor. It doesn’t care how this is reduced. However, from the employees’ point of view, some things are more palatable than others. Some things you can look at are:

    – reduction in employee benefit costs like pensions and health care (agree to a higher deductible or co-pay)
    – accept overtime at the regular rate, rather than at a premium
    – eliminate shift differentials
