If you don’t mind sharing hostels are a great way of saving money.

Basically if you want to get around Europe on a budget, your best bet is to stay in youth hostels. You’ll have to share a room with other people, but they tend to cost only a fraction of what a hotel room does, and you also get to meet lots of people from lots of places (frankly this is a lot more fun than staying by yourself in a hotel.)
hostelworld.com and hostelbookers.com are useful resources for booking rooms. A few notes though:
Book at least a few days in advance, especially during weekends and in the summer/during holidays. Decent hostels tend to fill up fast, and if you just show up you could find yourself choosing between paying a few hundred Euro for a hotel or sleeping in a train station.
Also Europe gets cheaper as you move south and east. Italy will lighten your wallet less than Norway, for example.
